American Elm | Ulmus americana
A tall tree with a broad canopy and distinctive serrated leaves. Known for its use in urban landscapes and shade. The once common and eternally beloved Elm has been utterly ravaged by the imported Dutch Elm Disease (a nasty fungus that is spread by native and non-native Elm bark beatles). The American Elm has a graceful vase shaped form in maturity and dynamic bark with fissures and ridges. In maturity it will become wider that it is tall and provide abundant and lovely shade.
The decline in the American Elm is truly a loss to future and present generations. It is *literally* the perfect shade tree. Our trees were sourced from disease-resistant parents.
American Elm is also a larval host to the Question Mark Butterfly, Painted Lady Butterfly, Columbia Silkmoth, Mourning Cloak Butterfly, and the Comma Butterfly. It is the author's opinion that this tree is perfect.
Choose a good spot for it - at maturity, it will typically grow to about 70ft, though it can reach up to 125 ft.
